Ladera Ranch’s summer reading program is under way! Saturday was the very first day to sign up, with Wednesday (yesterday) seeing our first family storytime program. It’s amazing how many people come out for these programs! It’s exciting to see how many people are coming to the library and using our services… but what happens at the end of the month when the program ends? We’ve got a good way to attract patrons to the library, but how do we keep them? The demographic that these programs are attracting are largely elementary-age children and their parents. This age is a very important time to start developing life-long library users. The library should become the “third place” for these children and their families: the place for studying, the place for extracurricular learning, the place for tutoring, the place for fun learning. And the summer reading program is an excellent time to introduce that to these children.
